ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Every photograph of Theth has the church in it: a small white box with a tin roof and a cross, standing alone in the hay meadows against the wall of granite peaks. Built in 1892 with the permission of the Ottoman authorities and the money of the Shala clan, it served a Catholic island that had kept the faith without priests for generations. The cemetery around it holds the village’s dead; inside, the walls carry photographs of the valley’s emigrants — Theth’s other history, written in departures.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Catholicism survived in Theth through four Ottoman centuries without a resident church; the 1892 church was the valley’s first and only, built by the Shala brothers’ collective labour. The church closed under Communism (1967, Albania’s atheist campaign) and was reopened in 1990 — one of the first churches in Albania to hold mass again. It remains the parish church of the valley and the symbol of the national park.
