ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Kulla e Ngujur is the Alps’ darkest and most fascinating building: a small stone tower in the Fushë-Theth meadows where, under the Kanun’s customary law, a man whose family had been drawn into a blood feud could be locked — by his own kin — behind its thick shutters until the elders brokered a besa truce. Days, weeks, sometimes months inside the one smoke-darkened room; the windows’ firing slits, the hearth, the privy hole in the wall all survive. Restored as a museum, it is the Kanun’s whole world in one building — and one of the most photographed structures in northern Albania.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The lockup towers served the mountain customary law (Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit) for centuries: instead of killing a pursued man outright, the codes allowed him to be confined until the feud was reconciled — a peculiar mercy of the blood-code. The Nikgjuraj tower is the last of its kind surviving in Albania; the family kept the tradition’s memory alive and the building was restored with cultural-heritage funds in the 2010s, its interior left as the confinement room it was. Visitors today climb the ladder to the very room where pursued men waited out their feuds.
