ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Dubrovnik represented King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, across seasons 2 to 8 of the television series Game of Thrones, and several of its real landmarks were used as filming locations. This walk connects those sites — Fort Lovrijenac and the West Harbour, the city walls and the Minčeta area, the Stradun and the Jesuit Steps — while keeping the city’s genuine history primary. The aim is not to treat Dubrovnik as a film set, but to use the screen connection as a lens onto the real architecture and past that made the city a convincing stand-in for a medieval capital. This is an independent, unofficial route; it is not endorsed by or affiliated with the programme’s producers, and it does not reproduce dialogue, scripts, stills, logos or promotional artwork.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You begin at Fort Lovrijenac, the freestanding fortress on its rock above the West Harbour, and look down over Pile Bay — the real defensive landscape that appeared on screen. From the fortress you follow the western walls toward the Minčeta tower at the highest point of the circuit, where the wall walk gives the panorama over the rooftops used to establish the fictional capital. Descending into the Old City, you walk the Stradun, the limestone main street that stood in for the city’s principal thoroughfares, and finish at the Jesuit Steps, the Baroque staircase near the Jesuit Church used as an additional location within the Old City. At each stop the real history of the site — the Republic of Ragusa, its walls, its civic and religious buildings — is explained alongside the screen connection.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

The route includes steep stone approaches to Fort Lovrijenac, long flights of steps on the city walls and exposed stone throughout, with little shade and significant summer heat. Crowds are heavy at the most recognised locations, particularly in peak season. Not every site in the Old City appeared in the series, and this walk does not claim otherwise; interior access to buildings, fortresses or any active filming sets is not guaranteed and should not be expected. Visitors are asked to respect residents, who live in the Old Town, and the active religious sites along the route.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Game of Thrones connection has brought many visitors to Dubrovnik, but the city’s real history as the Republic of Ragusa — its walls, fortresses, civic palaces and churches — is what made it a convincing King’s Landing in the first place. This walk uses the screen-tourism layer as a way into that older story, connecting each filming location to the genuine architecture and past behind it. The real Dubrovnik remains the primary subject; the television series is a recent chapter in a much longer history, and one that is not affiliated with or endorsed by the programme’s producers.
