ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Mount Srđ is the mountain Dubrovnik is built against, and hiking it on foot is the traveller’s alternative to the cable car: a steep but short climb on an old stone footpath that earns the same panorama the cable-car riders get, with the satisfaction of having walked it. The classic ascent starts from the village of Bosanka on the inland side and climbs the serpentines of the old pilgrim path to the summit cross, passing the ruins of the Napoleonic Imperial Fortress — itself a small museum of the 1991 siege — before opening onto the viewing terraces above the old town. From the top, the walled city, Lokrum and the Elaphiti islands stack up below in the single view that explains why the city was built exactly here.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

The standard route starts in Bosanka, reached by local bus or a short taxi ride from the old town, and follows a marked stone path climbing steadily for around an hour to the saddle below the summit. The path is rough underfoot — loose limestone and low scrub, with no water and almost no shade — but the gradient is consistent and the view opens progressively as you climb. At the top you reach the cable-car station and viewing terraces, the cross on the summit and the Imperial Fortress ruins; most hikers take the cable car down or walk back the same way.

HIGHLIGHTS

Moments worth savouring

01

The summit cross and the 360° panorama over the walled city, Lokrum and the open Adriatic.

02

The Imperial Fortress (Imperial) ruins and its small exhibition on the 1991 siege.

03

The old stone footpath itself — the historical route up the mountain.

04

The option to ride the cable car down and make the day one-way.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

A steep, exposed hike of roughly 3.5 kilometres and 400 metres of elevation from Bosanka, taking one to one and a half hours up at an unhurried pace. There is no shade and no water on the path — start early, carry more water than you think you need and wear real shoes with grip. The summit has the cable-car station, a café in season and the fortress ruins. Descent on foot retraces the same path, or you can buy a one-way cable-car ticket down. In summer thunderstorms or bura wind, stay off the ridge.
