ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Lokrum is the wooded island that lies a short distance off the Dubrovnik Old Town, reachable by a brief boat crossing from the Old Port in season. It is a protected nature reserve of pine forest and Mediterranean vegetation, laid out across walking paths that connect a medieval Benedictine monastery complex, a botanical garden of exotic species, rocky bathing areas along the coast and the small saltwater lake commonly called the Dead Sea. The island is the quiet green counterpoint to the stone of the walled city, and the views back across the water towards Dubrovnik are among the finest of the Old Town from the sea. Boat operation and island access depend on season, weather and current conditions, and the visit should be planned around the available crossings.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You take a short boat from the Old Port to the island, landing at the small harbour. From there paths lead through the protected pine forest to the Benedictine monastery complex, with its cloister and the buildings of the long monastic period on the island. Nearby is the botanical garden, established with exotic species across the island’s later history. Continuing toward the coast you reach the rocky bathing areas and the small saltwater lake commonly called the Dead Sea, set in a sheltered hollow. From the southern and western paths the views open back across the water towards the walled city of Dubrovnik.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Boat operation and island access depend on season, weather and current conditions, and crossings are reduced or suspended outside the main season; check current availability before travelling. The island’s paths are uneven and partly rocky, and the bathing areas are rocky rather than sandy, with limited shade in exposed sections. Swimming should only be undertaken in permitted areas and when sea conditions are safe; calm water, lifeguard presence and universal accessibility cannot be assumed. Visitors should plan to return on one of the available boats and must leave the island before the final available departure of the day — confirm the current last boat locally rather than relying on a fixed time.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Lokrum is the natural balance to the intensity of the walled city — a protected landscape of forest, monastery and rocky coast within minutes of the Old Town, where the maritime setting of Dubrovnik can be experienced from the water rather than from the walls. The Benedictine monastery and the botanical garden tie the island to the long religious and cultural history of the region, while the forest and the swimming coves make it the city’s green escape. It is also one of the best viewpoints back towards Dubrovnik, showing the walled city as a single fortified whole from the sea.
