ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Sea kayaking is the outdoor counterpoint to the wall walk: the same fortifications seen from the water line, where the walls rise straight out of the Adriatic and the city shows the face it showed to medieval fleets. Standard guided trips run from beaches just outside the Ploče or Pile sides, hug the base of the walls to the caves and coves beneath Fort Lovrijenac and Bokar, and stop for swimming and snorkelling in water that is calm through most of the summer. No previous paddling experience is needed for the standard route; double sit-on-top kayaks are stable and the guides set the pace for the slowest boat.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You launch from a pebble beach outside the walls, get a short paddling briefing and set off along the cliff line beneath the fortifications. The standard circuit passes the caves under the walls, rounds toward Fort Lovrijenac and Bokar, and stops at a sheltered cove or cave for a swim and snorkel break before paddling back with the old town above you the whole way. Trips are typically morning or late-afternoon to avoid the strongest heat and light.

What it’s really like
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The city walls and fortresses seen from sea level, the perspective the defenders had.
Sea caves and swimming coves beneath Bokar and Fort Lovrijenac.
Snorkelling in clear water over the rocks below the walls.
The sunset return with the old town lit from the water side.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Guided group trips with double sit-on-top kayaks, paddles and dry bags provided; a briefing on the beach before launch; and a total on-water time of around two to two and a half hours with swim stops. You will get wet from the waist down launching and landing, so wear swimwear and bring water, sun protection and a strap for glasses. Trips run in season and are weather-dependent — wind or swell can cancel launches. Independent kayak rental also exists, but the cave-and-walls route is easiest done with a guided group.
