ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in 1888, is the oldest scientific and cultural institution of its kind in the country and one of the most important museums in the Balkans. It sits in a purpose-built complex of four historic pavilions laid out around a botanical garden in central Sarajevo, and its collections span archaeology, ethnology, natural history and a research library built up over more than a century. For a visitor it is the place where the deep prehistory, the medieval kingdoms, the folk cultures and the natural landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina are gathered under one roof — a quiet, scholarly counterweight to the city’s Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian streets outside.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The museum was established in 1888 during the Austro-Hungarian administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the initiative of the provincial government and the scholarly societies that had begun to study the region’s archaeology, history and nature. Its first home was in adapted premises, and the present complex — four symmetric pavilions (archaeology, ethnology, natural history and the library) arranged around a central botanical garden — was built between 1908 and 1913 to designs by the Czech architect Karel Pařík. The museum operated continuously through the Yugoslav period and the siege of Sarajevo, when the buildings were damaged and staff worked under shellfire to protect the collections. After the war it was restored and reopened, and it remains a public research museum and a designated national institution.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The museum complex itself — four historic pavilions around a botanical garden, an early-20th-century ensemble worth understanding before entering any single collection.

02

The archaeology collection — prehistoric, Roman and medieval material from across Bosnia and Herzegovina, including finds that trace settlement in the region back thousands of years.

03

The ethnology collection — traditional costume, household objects, craft and religious items that document the cultures of the country’s different communities.

04

The natural history collection — minerals, fossils and zoological specimens that present the landscape and wildlife of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

05

The botanical garden — the green heart of the complex, laid out between the pavilions and open as part of the visit.

06

The Sarajevo Haggadah — the celebrated medieval Jewish illuminated manuscript held by the museum. Confirm its current display and access directly with the museum before visiting, as it is not always exhibited.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The National Museum is the institution that holds the long memory of Bosnia and Herzegovina in one place. Where the old town shows the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian centuries, the museum reaches back into prehistory, through the medieval kingdom, and across the folk and natural worlds that shaped the country. For a visitor it is the clearest single place to grasp the depth beneath the city — and the Sarajevo Haggadah, when it is on display, is one of the most significant illuminated manuscripts in the world, a symbol of the country’s long multicultural life.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The museum is open to visitors during daytime; an entry fee applies. Opening hours, admission prices and any special exhibition arrangements can change, so check current details through the official museum before travelling.
Haggadah
The Sarajevo Haggadah is part of the museum’s collection but is not always on public display. Confirm directly with the museum whether it is exhibited during your visit rather than assuming it will be available.
Location
In central Sarajevo, a short distance from the Austro-Hungarian centre and reachable on foot or by tram from the old town.
Visiting
Allow at least a couple of hours to move between the pavilions and the botanical garden; the complex is large and the collections are broad.

Current opening arrangements and admission should be confirmed through the official museum website (zemaljskimuzej.ba) before visiting.
