ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Trebević cable car lifts you from the edge of the old town to the ridge of Mount Trebević in roughly ten minutes, trading the bazaar for a panorama of the whole city folded into its valley. First built for the 1984 Winter Olympics, destroyed during the siege, and rebuilt in 2018, it is the easiest way to see Sarajevo from above and to reach the mountain that frames its southern skyline — the abandoned Olympic bobsled track, the walking paths and the wartime front-line positions are all on the plateau above. For visitors it is half transport, half viewpoint, and one of the clearest ways to understand how the city sits between its river valley and its mountains.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The original Trebević cable car was opened in 1959 and rebuilt for the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, when Trebević hosted the bobsled and luge events. During the 1992–95 siege the cable car was destroyed and the mountain became a front line; the concrete bobsled track survived and still winds down the slope as an Olympic and wartime relic. The cable car lay abandoned for more than two decades before being fully reconstructed and reopened in 2018, restoring the link from the city to the mountain. The lower station sits close to the old town and the upper station stands on the Trebević ridge at over 1,100 metres, giving the sweeping view over Sarajevo that the ride is known for.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The ride itself — the ten-minute ascent over the city roofs and the slopes of Trebević, with the panorama opening out as you climb.
The view from the upper station — a wide prospect over Sarajevo in its valley, the Miljacka and the surrounding mountains; best around sunset.
The abandoned bobsled track — the concrete Olympic run from 1984, a short walk below the ridge, now a strange and much-photographed relic.
The walking paths and plateau — trails along the ridge and past wartime trenches, offering a quieter, greener side of the city.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Trebević cable car is the quickest way to see how Sarajevo fits into its landscape — a city in a narrow valley under a ring of mountains — and to reach the mountain that was both its Olympic showcase and its wartime front line. The ride, the view and the bobsled track together compress the city’s 20th century: the pride of 1984, the destruction of the siege, and the slow return. For a visitor it is the easiest half-day escape from the old town and the best single viewpoint over the city.
