ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Orebić sits at the western end of the peninsula, its waterfront facing Korčula town across two kilometres of channel. It grew rich in the age of sail: its captains ran routes across the world’s oceans, and the big stone villas under the hill — set in gardens of palms and cypress — are their legacy. The Maritime Museum in the baroque Orebic family palace tells that story, and the Franciscan monastery above the town, founded in the late 15th century, gives the channel’s classic viewpoint from its terrace at 150 metres. Ferries and boats leave from the port for Korčula and the channel villages, and the sandy Trstenica beach lies a short walk east.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Orebić’s fleet was among the largest on the Adriatic in the 19th century — sailing ships under the Austrian flag on the world’s routes — and the town’s seafaring families built the villas, the sailors’ home and the museum collections that remain. The Franciscan monastery above the town has kept the channel’s watch since 1486; its Our Lady of the Angels icon was the captains’ protector, and its cemetery is the resting place of the seafaring families.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Orebić is the peninsula’s living centre and its maritime memory — the base for Korčula, Sv. Ilija and the channel villages. For a visitor it is where Pelješac stops being a drive and becomes a stay.
