ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The northern shore of Pelješac faces the Pelješac channel toward the mainland — calmer water, emptier coast and a string of small ports and coves that see a fraction of the south’s traffic. Trpanj is the largest, a working ferry port with a medieval castle ruin above the harbour and thermal springs in its history; Drače and the Jezero great salt-lake bay hold pebble coves and fish farms; the side roads drop to beaches that in summer can still be found empty. This is the peninsula’s slow side — the drive across, a swim stop, a harbour lunch.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Trpanj’s castle ruin watches the channel crossing that has carried traffic to the mainland for centuries; the Ploče–Trpanj ferry is the northern gate of the peninsula and ran as the coast’s main artery before the bridge. The north shore’s springs, salt-lake bay and fishing ports kept a quieter economy than the wine south — and still keep the quieter coast.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The castle ruin above Trpanj’s harbour.
The Jezero bay at Drače — a great salt-lake inlet with coves.
The empty pebble beaches along the north shore road.
The mainland crossing from Ploče by ferry.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The north shore is Pelješac without the itinerary — the emptiest swimming and the easiest pace on the peninsula. For a visitor arriving or leaving by the Ploče ferry it is the natural first or last stop.
