ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The channel between Pelješac and Korčula works like a wind tunnel: the summer maestral blows up reliably every afternoon, doubled in strength by the funnel of the two coasts, and the pebble beach strip at Viganj and Kučište has become the Adriatic’s windsurfing and kitesurfing capital since the 1980s. Schools and rental centres line the shore, beginners learn in the morning’s light breeze and the strong afternoon wind belongs to the experienced. Behind the beach the villages hold their old churches and the road climbs toward the abandoned hill villages and the trailheads of Sv. Ilija. Even non-surfers come for the scene — the water full of sails, the channel sparkling toward Korčula.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Windsurfing arrived at Viganj in the early 1980s, when the channel’s reliable thermal wind was recognised as among the best in Europe; schools such as the long-running centres at Viganj and Perna made the village a fixture of the sport. The villages themselves are older — Viganj’s St Liberan chapel sits on the beach spit, and the hill village of Nakovana above keeps its abandoned stone houses and the famous Nakovana cave, an Illyrian ritual site excavated in the 2000s.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The channel is Pelješac’s energy — the wind, the sails and the young scene that the rest of the peninsula’s quiet lacks. For a visitor it is either the sport or the spectacle, and both are free.
