ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Up on the Miroč plateau above the Danube, the Vratna river disappears into limestone and re-emerges through three natural stone bridges — Velika, Mala and Suva kapija, the only natural bridges in Serbia, with arches up to 25 metres high. The shortest walk runs from the 14th-century Vratna monastery up the gorge, through the great gate and back — a karst labyrinth of gorges, springs and beech forest that feels entirely unlike the river gorge below. The gates were a hermit refuge when the monastery’s monks first settled the valley; today they are the national park’s strangest walk.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The gates were carved over millennia as the Vratna river cut through the Miroč karst, leaving three roofed sections of its underground course standing when the cave roof collapsed. The Vratna monastery below — founded in the 14th century in the time of king Milutin — took the gates as its spiritual landscape: monks settled hermit caves in the gorge, and the great gate’s arch appears in the monastery’s oldest frescoes. The walking path was formalised by the national park in the 2000s.
