ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Cycling the Veliko Jezero shoreline is the definitive Mljet activity — the reason the park rents bikes at its entrance and the way nearly everyone who loves the island first sees it. The circuit is almost entirely flat, almost entirely shaded, and never out of sight of the water: an hour’s gentle riding past swimming platforms, through tunnel-like pine and holm oak, with the monastery islet appearing and disappearing across the lake. Extend it toward Polače or up to Goveđari and the ride becomes a half-day tour of the park’s every corner.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
Rent a bike at Pomena or the Goveđari entrance and ride the lakeshore path clockwise for the best swimming stops early. The trail is packed earth and old stone lanes, wide enough for two, with almost no climbing — children ride it happily. Swimming platforms invite stops every ten minutes; the shuttle-boat jetty for the monastery islet sits mid-circuit. For a longer ride, continue around Malo Jezero through the woods, where the path narrows and the crowds thin to nothing.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The flat, shaded lakeshore circuit — riding for every age and level.
Swimming stops off the platforms whenever the cicadas win.
The monastery islet across the water as a constant companion.
The quiet woods extension around Malo Jezero.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Bike rental at Pomena costs a modest seasonal rate; helmets are available on request. The full lakes circuit takes about an hour without stops, half a day with swims. In August, ride before ten or after four — the day-trip crowd rents bikes at midday. The surface is smooth enough for hybrid bikes; road bikes are unnecessary. Locks come with the rental — use them at the jetty while you cross to the islet.
