ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Mljet’s water is made for kayaking: the Great Lake is protected, warm and glass-calm in the mornings, and the island’s outer coast folds into a sequence of pine-fringed bays and cliffs reachable at an easy paddle pace. Kayaking the lakeshore gives you the park the way the monks saw it — engineless, quiet, close enough to the islet to circle it — while guided coastal trips run out to the caves and coves beyond Pomena. It is the island’s best second activity after cycling, and the two combine into a full park day.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
On the lakes, launch from the Pomena shore and paddle the Veliko Jezero circuit at water level — the monastery islet is a twenty-minute crossing, and its rocky edge is a natural swim-and-snorkel stop. Guided coastal trips (from Pomena in season) head along the north-west coast into coves unreachable on foot, with snorkelling stops in water that stays transparent. Sunset paddles on the lake are the quietest hour the park offers.
THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL
What it’s really like
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
Circling the monastery islet on mirror-calm morning water.
Snorkelling from the kayak in the lake’s clear brackish water.
Guided trips into the outer-coast coves beyond the paths.
Sunset on the Great Lake after the day boats leave.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Kayaks rent by the hour at Pomena in season; guided coastal trips run with double sit-on-tops, briefings and snorkel gear, typically three hours morning or late afternoon. The lake crossing needs only calm-weather judgement — it is sheltered — while coastal trips are weather-dependent and cancelled in bura or jugo wind. No experience is needed for either; the lake is the easiest water a beginner could ask for.
