ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Mljet outside the national park is a working island of stone villages, olive groves and one long ridge road, and a slow loop through it — Babino Polje, the island’s capital-in-name; Goveđari, the park’s stone village above the lakes; Kozarica and Prožurska Luka on the northern shore — is the half-day that turns a park visit into a real picture of the island. Nothing here is staged for visitors: the villages are small, the konobas cook what the island grows, and the driving itself, over the ridge with the sea on both sides, is the attraction.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

Start at Babino Polje, the largest village and the island’s administrative centre — stone houses around a parish church, a bakery, a couple of konobas serving the island’s lamb and its olive oil. Climb to Goveđari above the lakes, then drop to the north-coast hamlets of Kozarica and Prožurska Luka, both little more than a jetty, a cluster of houses and water clear enough to justify a swim stop. The loop is under fifty kilometres and half a day at an unhurried pace.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

Rent a car or scooter at Sobra (the ferry port) or Pomena; the roads are narrow but paved and quiet. Villages empty at midday — eat early or late. Fuel is available near Sobra only, so fill up before the loop. Konoba kitchens run on island time; dinner in Babino Polje means ordering what came off the boat, not from a menu.
