ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Most of Mljet’s visitors never leave the lakeshore; the marked trail up Montokuc, the forested hill between the lakes and the open sea, gives the park’s single best view — both salt lakes in one frame, the monastery islet mid-water, and the Adriatic beyond. The climb is short and steady through dense forest, and the ridge opens into a cleared lookout where the whole geography of the national park explains itself in a single panorama.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

The trail starts near Polače or Goveđari (signposted from the road) and climbs steadily for around forty minutes through holm oak and pine — cool underfoot even in summer. The ridge lookout at Montokuc looks down on Veliko and Malo Jezero side by side, the Soline channel between lake and sea, and the ferry route far offshore. Longer variants continue along the ridge toward the park’s western capes, where the forest paths empty completely.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

The climb is about 150–200 metres of elevation on marked but rustic trails — real shoes, water and a map or offline GPS. There is no water on the route. Add an hour for the ridge extension westward if the afternoon allows. In high summer, start by nine; the forest keeps the climb comfortable but the exposed lookout is hot at midday.
