ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

A swim day on Mljet’s southern coast is the island’s answer to the park: Saplunara’s genuine sand in the morning, the smaller coves along the coast road after lunch, and the cross-island ridge drive tying it all together with open-sea views. Where the national park is forest and freshwater-clear lakes, the south is open Adriatic — deeper blue, stony and sandy coves, and villages small enough that the beach bar is the local event.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

Drive from Sobra over the island’s ridge — about forty-five minutes — and drop to Saplunara before the midday crowd. Big Saplunara holds the main sand and the seasonal bar; Little Saplunara, a ten-minute walk along the shore, is the quieter cove. Continue along the coast toward Odysseus Cave for the afternoon: the cliff-top viewpoint above the grotto, a swim at the cove below if seas are calm, and the slow road back through Babino Polje for dinner.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

A car or scooter is essential — there is no bus across the island. Facilities at Saplunara are seasonal and minimal: a bar, toilets, no lifeguard. The southern coast takes swell when the wind is from the south; then the coves churn and the park lakes are the fallback. Bring water and sun protection — shade exists under the pines but the open beach has none.
