ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Ram is the Iron Gates’ small fortress with a big view. Sultan Bayezid II raised its five towers in 1483 to hold the Danube crossing against Hungary — one of the first purpose-built gunpowder bastions in Europe — and today the restored keep, its mosque chamber and the walls between them look straight down at the widest reach of the river. A café terrace on the bank below, the ferry to Romania puttering across, and the vineyards of Banatsko Novo Selo behind make it the most relaxed of the gorge fortresses.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Bayezid II built Ram in 1483 at the narrows of the river road, part of the Ottoman answer to Hungary’s Danube fleet: low, thick walls shaped for cannon rather than archers, among the first of their kind in Europe. The fortress guarded the ferry crossing for four centuries of Ottoman rule and passed to Serbia in 1867 with the last garrisons. Left to ivy for a hundred years, it was carefully restored in 2017 — towers conserved, a museum installed in the keep, the mosque chamber left as found — and now anchors the river-bank promenade at Ram.
