Bosnia & Herzegovina field guide
Plan a cycling or MTB ride in Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia & Herzegovina is quiet-road and mountain-bike country — deep river canyons, climbs to high karst plateaus and forest singletrack with little traffic. The Trans Dinarica cycle route and the Via Dinarica MTB alignment open the main ranges, and destinations from the Vrbas to the Una hold signed MTB trails and gravel traverses for every level.
FEATURED AREAS
Travnik & Vlašić
The climb from Travnik up to the Vlašić plateau and Paljenik — a long paved and gravel ascent with meadow singletrack above.
Kozara National Park
Forested MTB country in the northwest — the Kozara Yellow loop over Gola Planina and Duge Njive on quiet forest trails.
Una National Park
The emerald Una valley — the Čukovi–Štrbački Buk MTB trail to the great waterfall on riverside and forest track.
Banja Luka
The Vrbas canyon below Banja Luka — the Švrakava–Vrbas–Banjica MTB traverse along the river and through the hills.
Sutjeska National Park
Eastern Bosnia wilderness — the Tjentište–Donje Bare MTB out-and-back climbing up toward the Zelengora lakes.
WHEN TO GO
- April to October for most riding — May, June and September are ideal.
- Avoid the midday heat in July and August; start early and carry extra water.
- High plateaus such as Vlašić are rideable into late autumn; check for snow above 1,500 m.
WHAT TO CARRY
- A helmet and gloves — non-negotiable on descents and forest singletrack.
- A repair kit: tubes, pump, chain tool and a spare derailleur hanger.
- Plenty of water and snacks — few services on the mountain loops.
- A map or GPS track — signage is improving but not yet complete on every trail.
PLAN THE ROUTE
- Check the Trans Dinarica and MTBevo route notes for current trail surfaces and closures.
- Pick loops that match your fitness — the climbs are long and the descents technical.
- Refuel in the valley towns; carry enough for the high sections where there is nothing.
- Combine a canyon ride with a riverside rest day for a balanced trip.
SAFETY
- Stay on marked trails and roads — some areas were mined during the 1990s war and not all ground has been cleared. Check BHMAC guidance and never ride into uncleared or unmarked ground.
- Follow the Via Dinarica safety advice for high-route and remote riding.
- Watch for traffic on the main roads; the canyons are narrow and the shoulders thin.
- Carry a basic first-aid kit and tell someone your route and expected return.

Mljet
Stabanska Lakes and Piva Nature Park
The Stabanska Lakes are a pair of glacial lakes high in the Piva mountains, reached via Stabna on a separately planned mountain outing with possible gravel and forest sections. They are a proper mountain destination — cover mud, stream levels, snow, navigation, daylight and turning back, and do not guarantee swimming or vehicle access.
Plužine & Piva
Mostnica Gorge and Voje Valley
The gorge of the Mostnica river above Stara Fužina — potholes, rapids and the elephant-trunk rock arch carved by the water, with the optional longer continuation into the glacial Voje Valley to its twenty-one-metre waterfall.
Bohinj
Vogel Cable Car and Alpine Viewpoint
