ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Mljet National Park empties by five in the evening, when the last boat from Dubrovnik takes the day-trippers home and the visitors staying overnight have the lakes to themselves. Sunset on Veliko Jezero — the water gone still, the monastery islet turning gold, the forest scent strengthening as the heat breaks — is the island’s most quietly magical hour, and the single best argument for staying overnight rather than day-tripping.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

From Pomena or the lakeshore path, walk or ride to the jetty opposite the islet in the hour before sunset. The light moves across the lake and the monastery’s stone turns amber; swimmers have the platforms to themselves; the shuttle boats have stopped for the day. Dinner afterwards is konoba-simple — grilled fish, the island’s wine — and the evening is silent except for the water.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

Staying overnight in Pomena or Goveđari is what makes this possible — book ahead in summer, as the island’s bed count is small. Bring a light for the walk back; the lakeshore path is unlit. Mosquitoes rise at dusk near the reeds in late summer — repellent is worth packing.
