Plan a guided rafting trip in Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia & Herzegovina holds three of the finest rafting rivers in the Balkans: the Una in the northwest, with its canyon and the Štrbački Buk waterfall; the Neretva below Konjic, dropping through the largest karst canyon in Europe; and the Tara on the Montenegrin border near Foča, the “Tear of Europe” with the deepest canyon in Europe. All three are run by licensed rafting operators with trained guides and proper equipment, and the season runs from spring to early autumn.
FEATURED AREAS
Una National Park
The Una in the northwest — a canyon descent through rapids to the Štrbački Buk waterfall, with operators based around Bihać and the park.
Konjic & the Neretva
The upper Neretva below Konjic — a big-water descent through the largest karst canyon in Europe, run by long-established Konjic rafting operators.
Foča & the Tara gateway
The Tara on the Montenegrin border near Foča — the “Tear of Europe” and the deepest canyon in Europe, with operators running the Bosnian-Herzegovinian section from Foča.
WHEN TO GO
- April to October; May and June have the highest water and the biggest rapids.
- Summer descents are calmer and warmer, ideal for first-timers and families.
- Check the water level with your operator — releases and rainfall change the river fast.
WHAT TO CARRY
- A wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet — provided by the operator and worn throughout.
- A paddle and a sturdy raft — supplied by the operator.
- Water shoes or old trainers that can get wet.
- A dry layer and a towel for the take-out.
PLAN THE ROUTE
- Book with a licensed local operator on the Una, the Neretva or the Tara — they provide the boat, the guide and the equipment.
- Choose your river and section to match your group — the Tara and the high-water Neretva are the wildest; summer descents are gentler.
- Allow a full day for the descent, the safety briefing and the shuttle.
- Combine a rafting day with a night at a riverside camp for a two-day trip.
SAFETY
- Always raft with a licensed guide — never run these canyons on your own. Follow the International Rafting Federation guiding and safety standards.
- Wear the buoyancy aid and helmet at all times on the water, and follow the guide’s paddle commands.
- Stay on the river and the marked access paths — some canyon banks were mined during the 1990s war and not all ground has been cleared. Check BHMAC guidance and never enter uncleared or unmarked ground.
- Treat the Via Dinarica safety advice as required reading before any canyon trip.
